Newsletter Bounce Addon
Note: We always recommend using a professional delivery service to send your marketing email and properly manage bounces. We cannot guarantee that the extension can detect all types of bounces.
When you send a message to an invalid or unreachable address, you will most often receive a delivery error message in response. If properly formatted, such error notification messages contain a set of data, called a DSN (delivery status notification) with information about the type of error (temporary, permanent, etc.).
Newsletter Bounce Addon in Practice
If you use Post SMTP as SMTP plugin
If you are using the Post SMTP plugin, please note that the “return path” set in Newsletter Settings is not honored. If they can add an option to set that value (we should call it “Sender” but it is a bit misleading for non-technical humans), the return address should be set in that plugin.
How to setup Newsletter Bounce Addon
The extension needs a dedicated mailbox (email address) where all error messages are collected. The mailbox must be accessible via the POP3 protocol.
To instruct external parties to send error messages to the correct mailbox, you need to configure the “return path” in the main newsletter settings with the email address you created in the previous step.
Every hour, Newsletter Bounce Addon opens the mailbox, reads all messages, analyzes them and tries to detect if there are any permanent errors reported. Extract the email address and mark it as bounced.
POP3 settings consist of a username, password, hostname, and port (optional). These parameters can be found in your provider’s instructions on how to configure a generic mail client.
If the mailbox is accessible in secure mode (TLS, SSL), you can even select the security protocol to use, but remember to configure even the port (usually it differs from the standard port number 110).
